final week : Windows
When I think of windows, I think of glass, computers, skies, pretty much anything really. Well anything can be a window if you think about it, but I’m assuming that you mean glass windows. Windows really do have an strange effect on photographs, they warp it slightly and give it a different tone and colour. Of course they’re also absolutely infuriating to work with, but I suppose ranting is not the point of an artist statement.
week 13 : colours
It’s kind of strange how I started noticing all the colours after I started this project. Well, one of these photos were from winter, but I never really used it for anything and it didn’t actually stand out until now. There are so many places where I can find these colours and I didn’t even notice until I tried looking for them.
week 12 : macro
Macro photos are slightly terrifying to take. My camera was so close to whatever I was taking a photo of that I was scared I would break my camera. A lot of my photos turned out to be more texture photos because I found the texture interesting. Taking photos of something close-up looks a lot different from the same object further away. This project was interesting since it gave me a new perspective on things.
week 11 : long exposure
These photos were interesting to take. I decided to experiment with light painting after I saw the light painting photos and videos. Some of the photos turned out well, but many more turned out terrible. I’m honestly surprised that I managed to get permission to use the science room and equipment for this project. This project was definitely different from what I expected, but in a good way.
week 9 : Silhouettes
Silhouettes are surprising hard to take. So many factors can’t be controlled or predicted. After I decided to start taking photos, it started raining, then snowing. I had to wait for a long time before it was bright and sunny enough for silhouettes. Then, I had to look for somewhere that was empty, with no large buildings and trees in the background. But the photos turned out well, so in my opinion it was worth it.
week 8 : mundanity
We’re constantly surrounded by things we don’t notice. We’re so used to them that we don’t even think about them anymore. And normal, mundane things are different to everyone. Some people may find books normal, while others may not. To me, piano and music is normal since I grew up with it. To others, they may be exotic things that they rarely see. I tried to capture what seems normal to me in a different light.
week 7 : reflection
Reflections are everywhere. We see reflections so often, that we don’t really notice them anymore. Other than checking our own reflection in the mirror, we tend to ignore them in our everyday life. I wanted to take photos of the reflections that we don’t actually notice anymore. Some of the photos were accidental, but turned out surprisingly well.
week 6 : Jack Frost
Jack Frost makes me think of ice, snow, and the how vivid everything seems to become against a backdrop of snow. After a snowfall, everything seems so new and clean, covered by a soft layer of snow. I decided to use this opportunity to play around with the ice and snow that we rarely see here in Greater Vancouver. The paper cranes and red berries are so vivid against the white snow, while the ice seems strangely blue and cold in comparison. Photos of snow and ce seem so much sharper and clearer than photos of other seasons.
week 5 : Holiday/winter
When I think of holidays, I think of warm feelings, and bright, multi-coloured lights. All of my photos this time have a slightly warm feeling to them, like staying at home over the holidays. As the principal holiday I’m thinking of right now is Christmas, I’m thinking about hibernating in my warm room during the break, which is why all of my photos were taken at night. I had a hard time completing this project not because I didn’t have enough photos, but because I had too many. Holidays are always fun and enjoyable, which in turn, means that there are many chances to take photos.
week 4 : JAmie
Well.... not that I'm a stalker or anything, I just happen to have a ridiculous number of photos of Jamie. When I saw the personal choice photo challenge, I decided that I might as well use up these photos. Snow and Jamie seem to go together pretty well, at least in photos anyways.
week 3: Black and white
None of the photos I took this week were actually planned for black and white. They were all photos that I took for fun, but ended up perfect for black and white. Eventually, I decided not to use any of my planned black and white photos, and use these ones instead. The unplanned theme of childhood was a complete surprise to me, but seemed perfect for black and white photography.
week 2: opposites
Light and dark, remembrance and forgotten, solid and liquid. These are all things that came to my mind when I thought of opposites. But neither can exist without the other. There is no light, without dark. There is no remembrance without the fear of forgetting. Liquid and solid are part of the same cycle. Light glows brighter in the dark. There are some things that should not be forgotten, but are forgotten every year nonetheless. I chose opposites that cannot exist without the other, and are inherently intertwined.
Week 1 : Food
Ice cream, brownies, and hot chocolate are all some of my favorite types of food. The little girl in the first photo is my little cousin. She came to B.C for vacation, and as I find photos of children adorable, I decided to ask her to pose for a photo. It took a lot of tries (she ran around a lot!) but I finally managed to get a few good photos. For the other two, they were simply delicious treats, and I wanted an excuse to make them. They're both pretty christmasy, but hot chocolate and brownies always make me think of Christmas.
